I have birthed a new me, from my own loins. In light of there being too many “Aimees” publishing horror and sci-fi (why are we all like this?), I scoured my very Irish, Scottish, and Welsh family tree for a nom de plume. Hawise (Welsh, “ha-WEE-suh)? Too hard to pronounce, probably. So Íde (Irish, EE-duh) it is. I was originally going to change my surname as well. Íde Swain was the most popular of names when I polled all my 843 Facebook friends and the 3 people who see my shadowbanned posts on Twitter, but I thought Swain sounded a bit too English (great-grandma Swain was actually Scottish, but it’s an English name from Old Norse). Íde Galloway or Íde Finucane, after two more of my great-grandparents? Or my actual surname that people assume is fake because of the cognac? Yeah, that one. I’ll probably continue to publish humor under my given name, and save Íde for speculative fiction. Anyone else out there in the Mediumverse using a pen name for specific genres? How did you come up with your name?
